Life of Michael K

http://www.amazon.com/Life-Times-Michael-K-Novel/dp/0140074481
A while back I tried to read "The Life and Times of Michael K" by J.M. Coetzee a South African author. Try as I might, I couldn't get past the first chapter because I found it just too depressing, and at first didn't know why. After some thought I realised the reason is that it is all too real. When you read a book like that, then take a ride and see it in action, it can really get to you.

There are many people who go around collecting scrap metal which they convert to cash. I have great admiration for them, because they continue to do an honest day's work, at a time when so many others are finding the slightest excuse to turn to crime

According to bank archives the first 'bank' was opened in a tent with a trommel at the local market square. Before the municipality, or even the Kokstad Advertiser was established the branch was making it's mark in East Griqualand! Bank archives reported on births, deaths, stock, weather patterns, businesses that opened and closed, banks that opened and closed down, the establishment of the Museum, Royal Hotel, etc.
All thanks go to Letitia Myburh (Standard Bank Archives and Historical Services) and
Frans Kruger (Manager's husband for compiling and organising events and a newsletter)

De La Rey Lyrics

De La Rey

On a mountain in the night
I lie in the dark and wait
In the mud and the blood
As cold rain clings to my pack

And my house and my farm were burnt to the ground so they
could capture our land
But the flame and the fire that once burned now burn
profundly within my heart.

De La Rey, De La Rey come lead the Boer
De La Rey, De La Rey
General, General united with you we shall rise or we fall.
General De La Rey.

Against the soldiers that laugh
A handful of us against an army of them
With the cliffs of the mountains against our backs
They think they can run us down

But the heart of a Boer is deeper and wider than the enemy
can see
On a horse he has come, The Lion of West Transvaal.

De La Rey, De La Rey come lead the Boer
De La Rey, De La Rey
General, General united with you we shall rise or we fall.
General De La Rey.

Because my wife and my child are forced into prison to die,
As the enemies overruns us again, we are forced to take a
stand

De La Rey, De La Rey come lead the Boer
De La Rey, De La Rey
General, General united with you we shall rise or we fall

Op 'n berg in die nag
lê ons in die donker en wag
in die modder en bloed lê ek koud,
streepsak en reën kleef teen my

en my huis en my plaas tot kole verbrand sodat hulle ons kan
vang,
maar daai vlamme en vuur brand nou diep, diep binne my.

De La Rey, De La Rey sal jy die Boere kom lei?
De La Rey, De La Rey
Generaal, generaal soos een man, sal ons om jou val.
Generaal De La Rey.

Generaal De La Rey.

Want my vrou en my kind lê in 'n kamp en vergaan,
en die Kakies se murg loop oor 'n nasie wat weer op sal
staan.

De La Rey, De La Rey sal jy die Boere kom lei?
De La Rey, De La Rey
Generaal, generaal soos een man, sal ons om jou val.
Generaal De La Rey.

As performed by Bok van Blerk, a song about the Afrikaner struggle.

Kirstenbosch Gardens

Says Alex Perry “Africa is the world’s most varied continent: a place with 53 countries, 2,000 languages and a geography that veers from glaciers to deserts to nine of the world’s 20 fastest-growing cities.
Inside that tropical tapestry, South Africa is its most multicolored country. True, the suburbs of Cape Town are a lesson in how segregated different communities can be. But at its best the city offers a relaxed blend of African ethnicity and culture - and nowhere does that harmony look, or sound, better than at the summer concerts in Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden …”

Zapiro again:
If
Bignose had needed pigs to fly to get into the top seat, he would have organized that too. It is often said that people ultimately get what they deserve. I trust that this is true. May he have what he wants and get what he deserves.

Latest Hijacking Trend

There is a new number plate hijacking trend brewing around. These Hi-jackers will stalk you to a parking lot or mall, after parking your vehicle; they remove your number plate and wait for you to drive off.. They then follow you and overtake you displaying your number plate at their window as if you had lost it and want to give it back to you. Shocked that your number has fallen off your car, you bring your vehicle to a halt to get it from them. This is all they want you to do and by the time you realized what happened it is too late, your car was hi-jacked or you could have been raped/killed.

Please don't just stop for anything; a number plate is valueless compared to your life. Think what is happening before you react to it. Criminals are clever and cunning but are ruthless in getting what they want...

Wasted Money?

One wonders why, in a period when so many people have lost their jobs, their businesses and their homes and many more are hungry, frightened and desperately wondering what tomorrow will bring, there are governments that feel fit to abuse public money without shame or consideration. Obama’s inauguration cost the federal government around 45 million dollars as the rest was privately donated. However, in South Africa, where 22 million out of 44 million people live in abject poverty, the current government saw fit to spend R75 million on the inauguration of

Conversations

This morning was a funny one....
"Dad, have you ever broken any bones?"
"No. You?"
"No."
"What about when you flipped backward off the swing and smashed your face on the railroad tie?"
"I didn't break anything!"
"Are you sure? Have you seen your face?"
:-)
I got the squinty eye scrunched up glaring face for that one.
