More Speed Traps

KwaZulu Natal - Speedtraps 4

By sss2nv 10 NOV, 2008
Trapping at bottom end of Umgeni river Bridge. Both ways at diffrent times. Also at top of same hill as you approach Riverside hotel travelling North. Either at the left on the pavement or in the bush or on a ballustraded landing on the right.

On the bridge just after the Westville offramp, Lasers facing M19 both directions. Before 9am & after 3pm.

There is a new trap in Durban, coming into Durban just past the Brickfield Road on ramp they have set up a camera that is painted black on the left of the concrete blocks that are set up for the road works. It's smaller and more discrete than usual, so keep a lookout.

Second fixed camera just installed on N3 south bound lane on Van Reenen pass. Be careful. 100 km zone. The first is after you pass breakdown people on your right hand side on the pass. The new one is about 2 km after that. Both cameras are fixed on the left hand side.

There is a speed trap at the intersection of Kwambonambi. It is a 80km/h zone they are trapping with a laser camera, the detectors don't pick up the band they are using. There is also no car and they hide so you don't even know you have been caught.

Travelling north towards Kwambonambi +/- 4 km before they are trapping from the bush - there is no car or sign of them. They are using a laser camera so you don't know if you are caught. It is a 100 km/h zone.

Metro regularly traps at Brittania Hotel in both directions. I am of the opinion that us soft targets could make a statement if we could get 30 or more motorists to all drive at 60 km/h, preferably abreast, on a Friday afternoon leaving the city heading towards the N2. I am sure that given the current traffic volumes there will be a huge snarl up.

This week, I have noticed a new speed trap when travelling into Durban on the N3.
On the run down from Tollgate bridge into the city, just after the split at the bottom where you can either go to the beachfront or to the city, there is an overhead pedestrian bridge. The speed limit used to reduce to 60km/h after the bridge, but new 60km/h signs have been erected at the point of the split and the cops are sitting on the pedestrian bridge taking photos from the back.
They have been there for the last 2 days from early in the morning, so take care.

Travelling on the N3 into Durban, after the split at the bottom of the freeway where you can go to the Beachfront or into the city, there is a pedestrian bridge. The speed limit reduction signs to 60km/h have been recently moved to before the pedestrian bridge and the trap is on the pedestrian bridge taking pictures from behind. This is a new location since beginning September 2006

Look out for trapping as you pass Durban airport, under the bridge just before Isipingo off ramp.

If you're travelling on the N3, toward Pmb, and you take the "Paradise Valley" off-ramp (the off-ramp before the Richmond road off-ramp), there's a permanent camera mounted on the bridge, where it becomes an 80 zone. Seems to flash whenever it feels like it, though.

A new spot is on the Essex Terrace pedestrian bridge over the M13 east bound (Durban), near the MBA building. This is an 80 zone. The camera is sometimes left on its own and is not easily noticeable. When the officer is at the camera, he is noticeable. The vehicle is parked on the Essex Terrace side, hidden by the steps and vegetation from traffic coming from Pinetown side.

M13 split as you come in from either the N3 from the Pavilion or M13 from Westville into Pinetown. The fuzz have erected a permanent camera in the 80km zone as the two roads meet and this puppy is a double header servicing both roads. Nice one Mr Plod!

There is a guy who sits in the bushes from about 12:00pm till about 17:00pm with his laser gun. This whole road is a 60km zone. He sits anywhere along this road. They normally trap from Monday to Friday but they have been seen on weekends as well. So just take it easy when you on this road.

Fixed camera travelling South at Curry's Post / Balgowan interchange. Speed limit 120 km/h.

New permanent cameras on the N2, from Durban going to Mount Edgecombe, a few meters after the bridge in the vicinity of the KwaMashu/Avoca/Redhill offramp. Note: There are cameras in both directions!

Permanent cameras. Just before the Balmoral Truck stop & Shell garage (+- 10 km North of Harrismith) in both directions. There is a new speed limit of 80km in force.

There is a new speed trap setup when comming into durban. It's in the trees at the fork between Commercial & Old Dutch roads. The speed zone immediately changes to 60 so if you take the Commercial Rd side of the split then be careful of the trees on the right hand side of the road. I received a fine in the post and it said N3-COMMERCIAL RD-DUCT.

Come around the bend just after the Umkomaas onramp and at the entrance to the bridge (over the Umkomaas river) there was a cop with manned laser camera on the right hand side. Was a bit hard to notice him as the grass was long from not being cut recently. You only notice him at about 300m at which point he as already got a lovely photo of you.

Kloof M13 Camera often hidden on pedestrian bridge over M13 in Kloof before descent down Fields Hill - Durban bound side. 80km zone.

Durban - Victoria Embankment M13 If you are travelling west, there is a so-and-so on the centre island very close to the Maydon Road intersection traffic lights. It sits facing east - and is probably multitasking, shooting both westbound and eastbound vehicles. It would be interesting to know when it began this beat. And whether it will keep it up till there is no more speeding on this road. Else it is there only for the money.

Nottingham Road N3 South Travelling on the N3 South(Towards DBN) at the Nottingham Road offramp there is a 'Green mamba' aka permanent camera.

Marianhill N3 North and South Travelling on the N3 North and South just before and after the Marianhill toll plaza there is a 'Green mamba' aka permanent camera.

Pietermaritzburg N3 North and South Travelling on the N3 north(from DBN to Jhb) & South(to DBN) around the Church Str off ramp there is a 'Green mamba' aka Permanent camera.

Van Reenen / Tugela N3 South ON the N3 South(towards DBN) right before the Padstal(Sand River Valley turn off) Permanent camera.

Van Reenen N3 South ON the N3 South(towards DBN) right before the Van Reenen Police station on your left their is a Permanent camera. Just after the Estcourt 99km sign.

Van ReenenN3 North and South ON the N3 North & South after the Bergview Engen there is an overhead bridge. At the bridge there is a Permanent camera.

Howick N3 South Travelling on the N3 south towards DBN a new trick is average speed trapping. For 25km the speed limit is 100km/h. Camera reads your number plate at the beginning of the zone and at the end of the zone and if your average speed was more than 100km/h you get a nice love letter in the post. The 1st camera is about 100m before the Nottingham Road Offramp and the 2nd Camera is at Balgowan, it is located after the overhead bridge.

Durban Umgeni Rd. On Umgeni Rd towards Makro after the Conaught interchange - Metro usually trap from the opposite side of the concrete structure on the LHS (where the guys wait for "jobs"). Cameras are set to catch you from the back.Speed limit is 60km.

Pinetown M7 On the M7 near Hillcrest and Kloof ramps, watch for unmanned cameras on the overhead pedestrian bridges. Speed limit generally 80km in these areas.

Queensburgh M7 After the Bellville on-ramp onto the M7 towards the N2, manned camera on the overhead bridge hitting from the back. Speed limit - 100km dropping to 80km then to 60km.

Pinetown Richmond Rd. Near the Ninian & Lester factory (Jockey), opposite the Walker Tools factory, unmanned camera on both sides. The van is usually in the empty lots on the side. Speed limit - 60km.

Stanger N2 Approximately 500m before the Shell Ultra City, the metro hide on the LHS bushes. Speed limit 100km dropping to 80Km.

CAPE TOWN SPEEDTRAPS

By sss2nv 9 NOV, 2008
Cape Town Wynberg Hill Mr Speed Cop sits on the left downward side of the Bishopscourt side of Wynberg Hill. 60km/h zone. Can also be seen on the upward side of Wynberg hill, also Bishopscourt area. Sometimes at these locations for more than one day.

Cape Town Firgrove Road Bridge Travelling towards Ladies Mile Circle on Firgrove Road. The camera catches traffic in the 60km/h zone ON THE BRIDGE, just as one accelerates to come up the rise. Mr Speed Cop sits on the left side of the rise, obscured by the traffic sign and some shrubs. Usually Mondays.

Cape Town Western Blvd Western Blvd between Buitengracht and Portswood Rd, Greenpoint. Mobile camera on 12/June/2008. 60km/h zone.
Western Cape R304 Permanent camera situated at Kyamandi just before you enter Stellenbosch from the N1 - Speed 60km/h.

Cape Town Kloof Nek Rd A new fixed speed camera has been installed last week on Kloof Nek road in Cape Town about a 1km down from Kloof Nek opposite the turning to Firdale Road. It appears to be targeting traffic going up the hill and down the hill.
Edinburgh / Claremont - Temp Speed trap at Edinburgh in Claremont. It traps from behind so you cant see it. It's a 60 zone.

Cape Town N2 N2, inbound - camera just past the black river parkway (the M5) bridge over the N2.

SPEEDTRAP LOCATIONS

By sss2nv 9 NOV, 2008
Stellenbosch/ Paarl/ Somerset West/ Gordons Bay

Stellenbosch Strand road Three cameras (trapping both ways, speeding and running the red light) at the first 4-way robot as you come down the hill from the direction of the golf estate (Somerset west side). Speed limit 60 kph.
Klapmuts/Paarl R44 As you come into Klapmuts from Stellenbosch side there is a camera on the left side of the road opposite the store. 60km/h.

Stellenbosch R310 As you come into town from Kuilsriver the first robot inside town next to Distell has a camera trapping speed and running red. Actually the whole zone from entering Stellenbosch to that robot is a hotzone. They sometimes also catch after the robot when you come closer to bridge.

Stellenbosch / Paarl R44 When driving from Stellenbosch towards Paarl there is one about 5km outside Stellenbosch as you come down the hill. Trapping both ways. 100km/h zone.
Paarl Klein Parys There are two speedtraps just across the Electricity Dep. Face in either direction: When you come from Franschhoek to Paarl. It is a 60 zone. The cameras are not hidden and clearly visible.

Somerset West Main Road - below Heldervue As you head into Somerset West from Firgrove, before the traffic light intersection of Lobelia street and Main street. Random radar trapping from within the the shrubs near the bus stop below the Abundant Life church.
Warning: 60km/h zone. Possibly trapping both directions.
Somerset West Main Road On the corner of Main road and Upper Orange road, white vehicle parked on open ground. Radar Camera on westward traffic. Usually there on a Saturday morning.

Paarl N1 North bound Coming into the Hugenot Tunnel from the Paarl side, about 400 meters in are two big permanent camers watching both directions. Then before you leave the tunnel on the Worcester side, there are two more cameras watching both directions. Entrance from Worcester the cameras are also about 400 meters in.
Somerset West R44 There is an occasional manual camera on the R44 in the dip of the road between the Lord Charles Hotel robot and the bridge crossings over the R102 and N2. The camera points towards Stellenbosch bound traffic but can pick up Strand bound traffic. The is usually a white van parked illegally beyond the yellow line to mask the camera. Speed limit 60.

Gordons Bay / Strand Faure Marine Drive On the Faure Marine Drive from Strand to Gordons Bay just passed the Broadlands robot, the fixed camera is hidden among the median undergrowth facing and trapping Gordons Bay bound traffic only. Speed limit 60.
Kuilsriver / Stellenbosch Polkadraai Rd The cop hides at the entrance road to Polkadraai Farm Stall and traps both sides as you come down the hill - at the bottom where one usally is fastest. From stellenbosch their is no camera sign under the 100km/h sign but from Kuils River it is indicated. This is the worst(most lucrative) money making position I have ever seen.

Southbound on Van Reenen pass, the previous 100 zone is now 80. Big fines imposed. notice from traffic just says COURT where amount of fine should be. Thanks Hugh.
Permanent camera after the Kingsburgh turnoff as you're about to cross the bridge over the river on the left hand side.

I travel between Umkomaas and Prospecton daily and have seen the trigger lines along the roads on both northbound and south bound. Just never been able to see the cameras.
I finally found the camera between the pillars under the pedestrian bridge just after the Umbogintwini/Athlone park turnoff going southbound. There is also the new Camera after the Kingsburgh turnoff (southbound) as you about to cross the bridge over the river on the right hand side.

Overhead Speed Traps - Southern Freeway - on the steel bridge- south bound alongside the the train station. They Trap from Behind ,are generally well out of view due to Bridge girders.

Beware of Infrared camera which use number plate recognition software to measure your speed bewteen the Ashburton (Just outside PMB) bridge and the Camperdown bridge near Rainbow farms. If your speed between the two bridges works out to higher than 120 kph, you will be fined.
Fixed Cameras Trapping in both directions:
1) as you are on the mountain pass in the 80km/h zone by Inkwelo Motel and,
2) about 20kms north of Newcastle. Thanks Paul.
Durban metro police are up to their usual tricks again. Just received a huge fine in the mail. I was travelling north bound on NMR avenue. Trap was placed under the Argyle road bridge.

Durban metro police are up to their usual tricks again. Just received a huge fine in the mail. I was travelling north bound on NMR avenue. Trap was placed under the Argyle road bridge.

A cop sits above the free on a narrow bridge. As you come off the freeway where the speep limit is 120km, it drops down to 60km!! It is an easy target for unsuspecting mototrists who are doing 80km and getting fined!! Between my husband and I we received 6 fines from September to October as we both use this route often.

As you pass Durban Road and the campus heading towards the robots just before the hayfiields turnoff towards durban, there is a white combi or van. the guy sits right at the back with a lazer and the van doors are open, you can easily avoid noticing this due to the white van and the officer sitting inside the van right at the back, so guys please be careful,

Speed trapping on the old main road between Mtunzini and Gingindlovu. Camera is placed in the 80kph zone at the Ngoye turnoff before the Nyezane River Bridge. I have been caught several times but have yet to see the trap.

This was found some time ago!
